There's No Place Like Home

At some point prior to the events of this story, the gale surrounding Kirinos disrupts telecommunications and bars incoming traffic from air and sea. In Asgard, Illyana Rasputin and Doug Ramsey commence study of Amora's grimoires. Dani dispatches Warlock to locate Ororo Munroe. Roberto Dacosta returns to the City of Asgard. Karnilla transmits the New Mutants' recent exploits to Kitty Pryde via a dream.

Xavier's School: Rachel Summers relays Kitty's dream to the X-Men. The team determine to rescue Ororo and the New Mutants. Rachel dons her Phoenix costume. Scott Summers uses Arkon the Imperion's lightning bolts to transport himself and the other X-Men to Asgard. Karnilla magically assures the team's safety in the crossing.

Nidavellir: Sam Guthrie wakes Amara Aquilla from a disturbed sleep. Together, they assist Eitri in forging Ororo's uru hammer. Eitri grants Sam enchanted arms and armour. Sam and Amara depart for the City of Asgard with the uru hammer.

Asgard: The X-Men appear in the forest wilds and save the wolf prince. Hela confronts Rachel. Loki strikes down Warlock. Dani and Doug go to Warlock's aid. Scott divides the team. Kitty, Logan, and Rachel enter the City of Asgard. Dani and Doug arrive and enlist Roberto. They encounter Warlock, who seizes Doug and flees. The wolf prince leads Scott's team to Amora's castle. They are met by Illyana, Rahne, and Shan. Loki apppears and transports the team to his dungeons. Doug merges with Warlock. Sam and Amara enter the City of Asgard and are joined by Kitty, Logan, and Rachel. Loki ensorcells Rahne and the wolf prince and dispatches them to capture the remaining X-Men and New Mutants. A confrontation ensues in the City of Asgard, during which Logan is poisoned and Sam breaks the enchantment on Rahne. Combat ends with the arrival of Doug and Warlock. Logan, Rachel, Roberto, Doug, and Warlock enter the Hall of Heroes. Shan frees Scott's team; they are joined by Kitty, Rahne, and Sam. At the Hall of Heroes, Loki presents Ororo to his peers. Ororo takes up the uru hammer and strikes down Logan; Loki's power over her fails. Hela appears to claim Logan's soul; she is forced to retreat before the combined forces of Ororo, Scott, Rachel, and the Valkyrior. Kitty faces down Loki. Ororo destroys her uru hammer. Loki returns the X-Men and New Mutants to Earth.

NOTES: It is midsummer (p.74). According to Rachel Summers, Kitty Pryde and Illyana Rasputin "share a primal subconscious awareness of each other" (p.75); but see Karnilla's comments on her own part in the drama (p.116). Charles Xavier is away in England (p.77). When Amara Aquilla was a child, her father Lucius told her stories of the "faery folk" (p.79). Illyana Rasputin feels incomplete without her Darkchilde aspect (p.80). Hela states that Dark Phoenix "sent more souls unto me than any who professed to serve my cause", though whether her claim is meant to be interpreted literally is unclear (p.85). The City of Asgard is still being rebuilt in the wake of the Surtwar (p.86). Xi'an Coy Manh observes that "[t]he more Illyana practices the Enchantress' spells, the more like her she becomes" (p.87). The Valkryior can sense whether a person is alive (p.92), and know when death threatens the living (p.101). Peter Rasputin is more susceptible to Illyana's magic than are his teammates (p.107). A blow dealt to one Valkyrie is felt by all (p.114).

Asgard: Loki observes Ororo Munroe's actions at the Battle of New York from Hlidskjalf and determines to involve her in a ploy to conquer Asgard. He charges Amora with Ororo's capture.

Kirinos, Greece: Ororo comforts Xi'an Coy Manh. Dani Moonstar engages the New Mutants in a surprise combat session. Amora strikes Kirinos with a gale. Her agents abduct the New Mutants.

Asgard [A]: Loki transports Ororo to Asgard and ensorcells her. Amora imprisons the New Mutants in her stronghold. Illyana Rasputin teleports her friends elsewhere, but her own escape is prevented by Amora.

Asgard [B]: Shan resolves to die in the wasteland.

Asgard [A]: Doug Ramsey finds himself in the longhall of thane Harald Einarson, where he is made a thrall. Rahne Sinclair appears in the forest wilds. The wolf prince saves her from giants. 

Hel: Warlock evades Hela and goes in search of his companions.

Asgard [A]: Roberto Dacosta is employed as muscle by a city innkeeper. Amara Aquilla is transformed into one of the faery folk by dark elves.

Nidavellir: Sam Guthrie rescues Egvanda from trolls and is wounded. Eitri removes the boy to his home.

Asgard [A]: Dani prevents Hela's agents from slaying Brightwind. She is befriended by Mist. Amora gives Illyana's Darkchilde self independent form. She sends the Darkchilde in pusuit of the New Mutants.

Asgard [B]: Shan saves a child from a sand demon. She resolves to assist the child in escaping the wasteland.

Asgard [A]: Doug evades the Darkchilde. He is reunited with Warlock. Rahne spurns the wolf prince and goes in search of the New Mutants. Roberto is befriended by the Warriors Three.

Nidavellir: Amara leads a team of dark elves against Eitri. Sam repulses the dark elves and subdues Amara.

Asgard [A]: Dani flees the Valkyrior.

Asgard [B]: Shan continues to traverse the wasteland.

Asgard [A]: The Darkchilde ensorcells Roberto.

Nidavellir: Loki commissions an uru hammer of Eitri.

Asgard [A]: Illyana ensorcells Rahne. Shan is reuinited with Doug and Warlock at the edge of the wasteland. The child is revealed to be a Norn thread. The Darkchilde appears in company with Rahne and Roberto. Sam, Amara, and Dani join Shan, Doug, and Warlock against the Darkchilde. Shan possess the Darkchilde, freeing Rahne and Roberto. The New Mutants travel to Amora's castle. They free Illyana, who imprisons Amora in Limbo.

NOTES: Roberto da Costa gives the year as 1988 (p.13). Fair hair and blue eyes are characteristic of the Vanir (p.23). Hela remarks that Warlock's true nature remains unknown to him (p.28). Roberto's power is augmented by Asgard's sun (p.30). Dani Moonstar learned Cheyenne warrior games from Black Hawk (p.36). The story takes place after the Surtwar (p.48). A colouring error has made a Cheyenne of the Valkyrie Axe (p.55). Beta Ray Bill and Thor are absent from Asgard (p.57). The Valkyrior are immune to the Enchantress's spells (p.62). The Enchantress most fears Surtur (p.68).

Limbo: Illyana Rasputin proves herself to Warlock. They depart for wartime Cairo.

Cairo [A]: Amahl Farouk is revealed. He taunts Ororo Munroe.

Cairo [B]: Illyana and Warlock witness Charles Xavier's psionic duel with Amahl. Amahl escapes to the astral plane.

Cairo [A]: Warlock deceives Amahl. Illyana frees the New Mutants of Amahl's control. Amahl abandons Xi'an Coy Manh's body. He possesses Doug Ramsey, but is driven out by Xi'an. Ororo and the New Mutants depart for Kirinos.

NOTES: Amahl Farouk reckons Ororo Munroe's willpower second only to Charles Xavier's. He refers to himself as Charles "oldest--bitterest, deadliest foe". Ororo first encountered Charles in Cairo "nearly twenty years ago". Psionics cannot interpret Warlock's thoughts, but they can detect them.

Cairo, Egypt: Ororo Munroe, Dani Moonstar, Illyana Rasputin, and Warlock rescue Rahne Sinclair from Xi'an Coy Manh. Amara Aquilla, Roberto da Costa, and Sam Guthrie. Xi'an possesses Dani and reclaims Rahne. Illyana transports Warlock to Limbo. 

Limbo: S'ym misleads Warlock and is overcome by the metamorph. 

Cairo, Egypt: Illyana feigns an alliance with Xi'an. She delivers Ororo into her former companion's hands and seeks refuge in Limbo. 

Limbo: Warlock confronts Illyana.

NOTES: The Shadow King feeds on anguish. He fears Charles Xavier. Ororo Munroe does not consider herself diminished by the loss of her powers. Dani Moonstar was motivated to seek out Xi'an as much by longing for adventure as by concern for her friend. Illyana Rasputin plays soccer with her brother Peter. The Shadow King feels a kinship with Illyana.

Big Sur, California: The New Mutants depart for Madripoor. En route, Doug Ramsey locates Xi'an Coy Manh's Madripoor and Cairo headquarters.

Madripoor: The team evade customs. They assault Xi'an's mansion and are defeated. Dani and Illyana retreat to Limbo. They return to find the mansion abandoned. Dani and Illyana teleport to Cairo. Douge is captured. Warlock seeks out Ororo Munroe.

Cairo, Egypt [A]: Dani and Illyana are given refuge by Ashake.

Cairo, Egypt [B]: Dani and Illyana encounter near-future versions of Amara, Rahne, Roberto, and Sam, all servants of the Shadow King.

Cairo, Egypt [C]: Dani and Illyana join Ororo against the Shadow King.

NOTES: Sam Guthrie learned to swim in the Kentucky mountains. Nguyen Ngoc Coy had not seen Xi'an Coy Manh for an unspecified number of months before being summoned by her in New Mutants Vol 1 #30. Roberto bears a scar from the Arena. Rahne first refers to her power as a gift rather than a curse. There is no law of extradition in Madripoor. Illyana is apparently immune to all psionic probes.

Los Angeles, California: Kitty Pryde escapes Xi'an Coy Manh's psionic possession. Xi'an deploys Alison Blaire against her former companions. Illyana frees Alison. The team pursue Xi'an to an underground hangar. Xi'an is revealed; she escapes soon thereafter. Nguyen Ngoc Coy is taken into custody. The New Mutants determine to find Xi'an.

NOTES: Xi'an Coy Manh photographs and blackmails Arena attendees. It is unclear whether Manuel de la Rocha can "wreak a permanent change in a subject's emotional state". Emma Frost guesses that Sharon Smith is between 14-15 years old. Sharon was a feral child. Her IQ is "comparable, possibly superior, to Kitty Pryde's", yet she remains "more animal than person". She regards Emma as a surrogate mother and considers herself a personal friend of the New Mutants.
