At some point before the events of this story, Viper and Keniuchio Harada establish a stronghold at Big Sur. They plot to use the Dark Rider to retrieve the Project Matrix crystal from AIM's Black Mesa facility.
Xavier's School: Stevie takes the New Mutants to a fair in Salem Centre. Psychosomatic pain severs Charles' contact with the team.
Salem Centre: The New Mutants encounter Team America. Roberto is rebuffed by Wolf. Viper's agents strike and are repulsed by Team America and the New Mutants. During the fight, Team America's mutant power transforms Danielle into the Dark Rider. She is captured by Keniuchio.
Big Sur, California: Viper and Keniuchio evaluate Danielle's abilities and decide to ransom the Cheyenne to Team America in exchange for the Project Matrix crystal.
Xavier's School: Michael Rossi assists Charles in identifying Danielle's kidnappers. Charles divines the nature of the Dark Rider via Cerebro. He departs for Washington, DC.
Washington, DC: Viper meets with James McDonald concerning Danielle's ransom and departs. Team America convene at James' residence within the hour. Charles arrives shortly thereafter and reveals to Team America that they are mutants. He takes the motorcyclists into his tuition. The New Mutants determine to rescue Danielle.
NOTES: Emmanuel da Costa owns several large personal aircraft. Roberto saw Team America perform in Rio before he joined the New Mutants, and had an especial preference for Wolf.
