At some point before the events of this story, Emma Frost assembles the Hellions. James Proudstar is among their number. Emma pirates the design of Charles Xavier's Danger Room in constructing the Massachusetts Academy Combat Room.
Xavier's School: Illyana Rasputin assumes her astral form and infiltrates the Massachusetts Academy.
Massachusetts Academy: Emma Frost taunts Kitty Pryde. She discovers Illyana and repulses the sorceress.
At some point between now and the end of this issue, Emma substitutes Kitty with a three-dimensional hologram.
Xavier's School: Emma's attack frees Illyana's psychic familiars. The New Mutants contain the entities, and Illyana relays Kitty's situation. After failing to successfully contact the Fantastic Four and the Avengers, the team elect to rescue Kitty themselves. They attempt to run a Hellfire Club combat sequence in the Danger Room and are denied. Dani prints out information on the club from the mansion's computer library for study en route. Illyana dons Kitty's old uniform.
New York: The New Mutants take the Bruckner Expressway to Snow Valley. Sam attempts to allay Rahne's fear of Illyana.
Massachusetts Academy: The expressway reaches Snow Valley at early evening. Amara tunnels a way into the hidden complex. Illyana discovers the three-dimensional decoy, and Emma plays her hand.
NOTES: Illyana remarks that Kitty should not be able to see her astral body. The Port Authority Bus Terminal was Sam's first exposure to New York after joining the New Mutants. The New Mutants encountered Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson the previous summer. Sam attended Sunday school as a child. Rahne's mother died in childbirth. Sam's hunting expeditions with his father took place in winter.
