Flying Down to Rio!
At some point before the events of this story, Emmanuel da Costa conceives an ambition to develop a corporate empire by seizing the Maderia. He visits Sao Paulo on business. It is unclear whether it is in Sao Paulp that Emmanuel meets with Sebastian Shaw and arranges Nina's kidnapping.
Big Sur, California: The X-Men search the coast for Xi'an. Nina arrives and invites the New Mutants to accompany her to Manuas. They depart for Rio de Janeiro one week later.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: The New Mutants witness a quarrel between Emmanuel and Nina concerning the future of the Maderia. Nina is kidnapped by Hellfire Club agents the next day, and is rescued by the New Mutants. Several days pass and Nina and the team depart for Manuas, observed by Emmanuel and Sebastian.
NOTES: Rogue is not with the X-Men to Big Sur, and Wolverine is in Japan. Nina da Costa was away on an archeological expedition at the time of the New Mutants graphic novel. Emmanuel da Costa's Ipanema mansion was constructed by a prince in the 19th century. Emmanuel was a house boy there, the son of a maid. He became a millionnaire at 20, and married Nina at 30.
